<p>Fish oil has  been scientifically proven to help individuals with many metabolic symptoms including raised fat levels in the heart and liver.   Researchers in Italy who were researching fish oil have now discovered another great source of Omega-3s that are actually more efficient than fish oil:  Krill Oil.</p>
<p><strong>What is Krill?</strong><br />
<strong>Krill</strong> is a shrimp-like marine invertebrate animal. These small crustaceans are important organisms of the zooplankton, particularly as food for baleen whales, manta rays, whale sharks, crabeater seals, other seals, and a few seabird species that feed almost exclusively on them. Another name is <strong>euphausiids</strong>, after their taxonomic order <strong>Euphausiacea</strong>. The name <em>krill</em> comes from the Norwegian word <span lang="no" xml:lang="no"><em>krill</em></span> meaning &#8220;young fry of fish,&#8221; which is also often attributed to other species of fish.</p>
<p>The study published in the Journal of Nutrition concludes that both conventional fish oil and krill oil are effective in reducing fat levels, but that krill oil is more effective. The mechanisms of why this was the case had not been made clear in the study, but suggested that long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce activity in the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system sounds complicated and hard to pronounce, but it consists of a group of neuromodulatory lipids and receptors that influence your appetite, pain sensation, mood and memory.</p>
<p>The researchers found that when parameters that were associated with obesity were considered the krill oil reduced rats heart fat levels by 42% compared to 2% for conventional fish oils. A 60% reduction in liver fat was also observed for krill oil supplementation compared to only 38% for fish oil supplementation.  Not only is the reduction significant it is just as important to note that fat build up in the liver can lead to insulin insensitivity and cause type-2 diabetes.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Researchers stated:</strong> <em>“It is worth noting that in all tissues exhibiting changes in endocannabinoid concentrations, EPA and DHA concentrations in the PL (phospholipid) fraction were increased and the increase was greater in the Krill Oil compared with fish oil-supplemented rats.”</em></p></blockquote>

<p>Are you tired when you wake up?</p>
<p>Do you have fat around your abdomen but tend to be skinny elsewhere?</p>
<p>Are you wondering why you can&#8217;t lose weight, your cholesterol and blood pressure are high and you are frustrated?</p>
<p>Many people are working more and sleeping less these days, attempting to take advantage of the sleep dark cycles that mother nature created. Unfortunately, many are finding they can&#8217;t manipulate the basic foundation of sleep and their health is suffering.</p>
<p>The following sleep tips are from my <a href="http://optimalfitnesslifestyle.net/wp/services/nutrition-services/metabolic-typing/" target="_self">metabolic typing group program</a> are often given to my clients that suffer from sleep deprivation:</p>
<ul>
<li>The research indicates that physical recovery occurs between 10 pm &#8211; 2 am and mental recovery occurs between 2 am &#8211; 6 am (Chek, 2003). In addition, Chek states, &#8220;A lack of sleep makes you fat, hungry, impotent, hypertensive and cancerous with a bad heart (Chek, 2003).</li>
<li>Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars. These sugary treats often lead to night sweats &amp; sleep disturbances between 1-3 am.</li>
<li>No TV /computer work right before bed. A better idea would be to read, meditate or stretch.</li>
<li>Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible.</li>
<li>Read in bed or journal.</li>
<li>Be consistent with sleep/wake cycles. Go to bed and wake up close to the same time daily.</li>
<li>Decrease Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMF’s) (check out a gauge meter @ <a href="http://www.cutcat.com" target="_blank">www.cutcat.com).</a></li>
<li>Eat a high-protein snack 2 hours before bed.  Add low glycemic fruit as needed.</li>
<li>Keep temperature around 70 degrees.</li>
<li>Decrease caffeine &amp; alcohol.</li>
<li>Avoid water/fluids prior to bed. Drink 2-3 glasses of filtered water upon rising.</li>
<li>Have your adrenals /hormonal levels checked-talk to <a href="http://optimalfitnesslifestyle.net/wp/contact-us/" target="_self">Brien.</a></li>
<li>Relax prior to bedtime-massage, relaxation cd, sauna, bath, meditation.</li>
<li>Limit medical drugs and use only as needed.</li>
<li><a href="http://optimalfitnesslifestyle.net/wp/services/nutrition-services/chiropractic-care/" target="_self">Detox</a></li>
<li><a href="http://optimalfitnesslifestyle.net/wp/services/hypnotherapy/" target="_self">Hypnotherapy</a>/EFT.</li>

<p>Stress is often a topic that comes up for most people that come into the center. Just like the word health, everyone seems to have a different definition of it. From what I have observed one feels &#8220;stressed&#8221; when they feel a loss of control of their life. However, one may feel in control, but internally their physiology is stressed and symptoms of stress present themselves (high blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar imbalances, pain, fatigue, weight gain especially in the belly area, etc).</p>
<p>The interesting thing about stress is that you can’t live well with too much of it and you won’t achieve your goals if you don’t have any of it! The key to achieving your goals and creating an ideal, happy, healthy life is to “manage” overall stress to the body. In order to accomplish this we must achieve metabolic balance.</p>
<p>Loss of balance involves a stress input which exceeds the limits we can handle at a given time.<br />
Symptoms result when we have exhausted are limits.</p>
<p>Paul Chek, one of my mentors and developer of the Nutrition &amp; Lifestyle Coaching Program at the CHEK Institute in San Diego stated that there are six types of stress, which we must figure out how to balance (Nutrition &amp; Lifestyle Coaching Seminars, 2003):</p>
<ol>
<li>Psychic (spiritual, mental, emotional)</li>
<li>Nutritional (insufficient quantity or quality)</li>
<li>Chemical (toxic substances, non-nutritional dietary excesses)</li>
<li>Physical (postural, structural, traumatic, degenerative)</li>
<li>Electro-magnetic (x-ray, microwave, geomagnetic, cosmic, etc)</li>
<li>Thermal (cold or  hot)</li>
</ol>

<p>Happy Monday!</p>
<p>Last week the topic for the newsletter was on the recent research linking SLEEP DEPRIVATION TO INCREASED HUNGER &amp; WEIGHT GAIN. This is a special interest to me because many of my clients want to lose weight and they want to do it the simplest way possible. Many believe it has to be difficult. Good news&#8230;sometimes it doesn&#8217;t have to be. I came across more information about the link between obesity and sleep deprivation and I thought I would share because many of you can benefit from just getting more sleep. This information doesn&#8217;t cost you anything, but it could save your life.</p>
<p>The following information was taken from Health Sciences Institute e-Alert on December 09, 2004:Source: <a href="http://www.agora-inc.com" target="_blank">www.agora-inc.com</a>.</p>
<p>By some estimates, Americans average about six hours per night. That may be enough for some. But if you want to help make your diet work, you&#8217;ll probably need more than that, according to a study from Columbia University, presented at the annual scientific meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO).</p>
<p>Researchers used almost 10 years of data collected on nearly 18,000 subjects who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES); a study that gathered information on general dietary and health habits. After accounting for other factors that contribute to obesity, the Columbia team reported these estimates:<br />
• Less than four hours of sleep per night increases obesity risk by 73 percent, compared to subjects who slept seven to nine hours each night<br />
• An average of five hours of sleep per night increases obesity risk by 50 percent<br />
• An average of six hours of sleep per night increases obesity risk by 23 percent</p>
<p>The researchers believe that body chemistry might explain the link between sleep deprivation and obesity. A lack of sleep increases grehlin, a hormone that sends a hunger signal to the brain. At the same time, the level of a protein called leptin drops. Leptin helps suppress appetite, so when the level is low, appetite increases. Combine too much grehlin and too little leptin, and you&#8217;ve set the stage for an intake of too many calories.<br />

For those diligent souls who find a way to reduce their waking hours and get more sleep, a reduced risk of obesity is just part of the reward. Because if body weight is controlled ¬ especially abdominal fat ¬ simple daily tasks may be more manageable in later years.</p>
<p>In another study presented at the NAASO annual meeting, researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center demonstrated how abdominal fat may play a role in disability among the elderly. More than 9,000 subjects were measured for waist-to-hip ratio, weight and height. Nine years later these measurements were taken again. At that time the subjects also answered questionnaires about their ability to perform typical daily activities such as household chores, cooking, dressing, etc.</p>
<p>The researchers found that subjects whose abdominal fat increased over the follow-up period were less able to adequately care for themselves and complete the daily tasks most of us take for granted. Of course, this is only one drawback to out-of-control abdominal fat. Of more concern is the development of metabolic syndrome, for which abdominal fat is one of the key symptoms. As I&#8217;ve mentioned in previous e-Alerts, when an expanding waistline is combined with high blood pressure and elevated levels of triglycerides and C-reactive protein, risk of heart disease and type-2 diabetes rises sharply.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not suggesting that getting a little more sleep each night is all it will take to prevent the development of abdominal fat or metabolic syndrome. But when we connect these dots, and then connect others ¬ such as daily exercise and a balanced diet free of refined simple carbohydrates ¬ a picture of good health emerges.<br />

<p>People often refer to the &#8220;French Paradox.&#8221; This is the notion that French people eat foods high in saturated fat, but never get fat. To me, that&#8217;s not a paradox. There&#8217;s no convincing evidence that saturated fats pack on the pounds.  It&#8217;s more useful to think about the &#8220;American Paradox&#8221; &#8211; a nation full of unhealthy people obsessed with healthy eating.</p>
<p>At the root of this disorder is the guilt Americans feel when they eat foods they really love &#8211; like steak, eggs, and bacon. All the favorites that we&#8217;ve been conditioned to fear with the dreaded word &#8220;cholesterol.&#8221; Most sources tell you to avoid fat in favor of low-fat, vegetarian, or whole-grain artificial diets. But if you take a closer look (and avoid the commercial interests), you&#8217;ll discover that the secret to reducing bad cholesterol isn&#8217;t avoiding fat. Studies show that if you combine the right nutritional elements you can reduce your bad cholesterol (LDL) as much as, and in many cases more than, the low-fat junk diets or even prescription statin drugs.</p>
<p>Avoidance of fat in favor of grains will increase your risk of heart disease, because diets that are high in grains promote high insulin levels. And high insulin levels have been shown to have a direct correlation to heart disease. So here&#8217;s the key: Choose the right fats (rich in omega-3 fatty acids) and healthy proteins (rich in essential amino acids).</p>
<p>Choosing the right fats means eating more fish and the right kind of red meat. Fish is high in omega-3s. It also has a complete mixture of all the essential amino acids in a bio-available, rapidly absorbable protein.  And, yes, you can still eat red meat, even steak. But choose cuts of meat from naturally raised, hormone-free, grass-fed animals. That&#8217;s the important caveat.</p>
